Download the “Socrative student” app for iOS or Android devices (free in the ‘App Store’ or ‘Google Play’).
Since technology is now creeping into every aspect of our lives, and especially the lives of young people, grade 9 students will be making use of handheld devices in class-for specific, closely monitored purposes.
We will be periodically using personal web devices (cell phone, iPod touch, etc) in class to conduct quick polls, assignments/practice quizzes and group exercises through the web based app, Socrative. Although many students do have such devices, it can’t be expected that all students have one with them at school; for that reason, these activities can be done via the classroom computers as well. Although there are hopes of doing so in the future, it is not yet my intention to use such tasks as marks for reporting purposes.
Privacy Concerns: No personal information is collected on students; in fact only their first name and last initial will even be entered in the data that I will see. Even the information entered by me (as a teacher and moderator) is minimal and does not associate me with our school, community or even city.
The use of the above mentioned devices during my class does not mean there is a change in school policy-it is still the expectation that devices are at the very least, turned off and out of sight throughout the common areas of the building and other classrooms unless given explicit permission from a teacher.
Please feel free to contact me with any concerns.
