Of interest to all students of Mr. O’Hearn

Math 9

Two Socrative tasks done in class today…these were meant to remind you of some key topics from the past few months that will reappear on the term test in about two weeks.

In-Class Assignment was done. Operating with polynomials, just like the work we were doing last week. Expect another one later this week (likely Friday).

Homework: Start refreshing for the term test.

Math 8

  • Weekend Homework was: pg.119-120, #3, 7 and 8 (convince me, not a classmate), 9 and try #10.

New from yesterday/today:

 pg.119-121, #1,2

pg.138 , #1,2,5

pg.140,-141 #1,5,9.

  • Moving on to chapter 3.3…Begin Discover the Math Part A on page 121. You will not be working with a partner, rather you will do both drawings and compare them on your own. (when the instruction says to do drawings on two different pages, just do them both on the same page; if you don’t have coloured pencils, just label them as red, blue, green)
  • Complete  up to the end of #3 on pg 122. We’ll discuss tomorrow.

Math 9

Download the “Socrative student” app for iOS or Android devices (free in the ‘App Store’ or ‘Google Play’).

Since technology is now creeping into every aspect of our lives, and especially the lives of young people, grade 9 students will be making use of handheld devices in class-for specific, closely monitored purposes.

We will be periodically using personal web devices (cell phone, iPod touch, etc) in class to conduct quick polls, assignments/practice quizzes and group exercises through the web based app, Socrative. Although many students do have such devices, it can’t be expected that all students have one with them at school; for that reason, these activities can be done via the classroom computers as well. Although there are hopes of doing so in the future, it is not yet my intention to use such tasks as marks for reporting purposes.

Privacy Concerns: No personal information is collected on students; in fact only their first name and last initial will even be entered in the data that I will see. Even the information entered by me (as a teacher and moderator) is minimal and does not associate me with our school, community or even city.

The use of the above mentioned devices during my class does not mean there is a change in school policy-it is still the expectation that devices are at the very least, turned off and out of sight throughout the common areas of the building and other classrooms unless given explicit permission from a teacher.

Please feel free to contact me with any concerns.

Math 9

Breaking from the ‘front to back’ order in the text book. We’ll be working from chapter 7 and 3 over the next few weeks.

Today: further practice with distributive property. (Scalar times monomials, binomials and longer polynomials, monomials times all and binomials times all). Brief discussion of FOIL (they’ll see this next year, but it’s used to keep track of the distributive property with two binomials being multiplied.

See Documents page for notes/images from today.
